The Identification of Chemical Reactions kit helps students learn through standard laboratory procedures to identify four types of chemical reactions: color changes, precipitates, gas generation, and exothermic reactions. Seven known solutions are mixed into any of 21 possible combinations and then are observed. In one case, there is no general indication that a reaction took place.
More advanced students may be asked to write the probable chemical equation of each reaction. This is a dramatic, motivating lab that involves deductive reasoning, especially when the unknowns are tested. This is a lab activity gives the students the ability to mix the chemicals themselves and observe the reactions first hand.
The compact chem-plate gives each student the equivalent of a rack of test tubes and other space consuming apparatus. Each set contains enough material for 12 lab groups of 2 students each for 2 classes.
The contents include 12 lab aids chemplates with spatula, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 1 hydrochloric acid, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 2 sodium carbonate, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 3 sodium hydroxide, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 4 potassium chromate, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 5 calcium chloride, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 6 sodium sulfite, 2 drop-controlled bottles of solution 7 copper sulfate, 2 drop-controlled bottles of unknown solution, 50 student worksheets and guides, and 1 instruction manual with MSDS.
